Bulk Insulations

Select The Best Insulation for Your Climate

Bulk Insulation is the one of the most common forms of insulations used in Australia. It effectively acts like a blanket in your ceiling protecting your home from losing heat in winter and cool in summer.

Bulk insulation works by trapping pockets of still air between its fibres, retarding the transfer of heat. This resistance to heat flow is measured by the R-value - the higher the insulation's R-value, the longer it takes heat to transfer through and the more effective it is. Generally, the R-value increases with the thickness of the batt.

What To Consider When Selecting Insulation Material

R-value - The performance of insulation is measured by its R-value. A high R-value means greater resistance to heat flow
Cost - The cost of insulation can vary greatly between materials and installation requirements
Climate - Where you live will determine what type of insulation you choose as different insulation has different heat and cooling properties
Safety - considering flammability of material and health issue through irratation.
Acoustic Properties - Insulation can be used to control sound as well as temperature.
Weight Of Insulation - Older ceilings may require lighter insulation material

Types of Bulk Insulation

Bulk Insulation comes in many forms including;

  • Glasswool or FibreGlass - Made from melted glass spun into a flexible into a mat or batt of fine fibres
  • RockWool - Made from volcanic rock melted at high temperatures and spun into a mat or batt of fine fibres
  • Natural Wool - Made from sheep’s wool formed into batts or blankets
  • Polysester - Made from polyester fibres (including recycled PET bottles) spun into a flexible mat or batt
  • Loose-fill insulation - which unlike batts is loose consisting of shredded or granulated material made from cellulose, natural wool or granulated rockwool - often used where difficult to access cavity
Your Insulation installer should guide you in selecting the best bulk insulation products for your home, acoustic and climate needs.
